young goodman Brown by mekina caldwell

This story was interesting, but also very confusing to me. What made it confusing, was that one minute they mention things realted to christinanty, then they go on to talk about stuff like witches, and the devil. I don't know whether he was dreaming. I could not get into this story like I wanted to, because it was confusing. I think whatever that was that was making him think about all that stuff, was a warning of something that could happen in the future, I am not sure though.

  1. It's funny to think about the fact that, at a different time in American history, Christianity, witches, and the Devil were almost ALWAYS hanging out in the same conversation. That is, people regarded them as closely related things. Look up the "Salem witch trials" of the late 17th century!
(But I'm glad times have changed to the point that their combination seems confusing!)

It's interesting that you say, "whatever that was that was making him think about all that stuff," as if to say he was provoked to have these thoughts... by something or someone in his life prior to going into the woods? By a theological argument with his minister? By a piece of bad sausage he ate before his journey? Or by the actual Devil himself?
