I recommend that you go back through your notes just before watching the movie. This will help you. You'll see more of what's going on in the scenes.
**Your assignment for this week:
Choose one scene from the movie to analyze. In your analysis, you need to describe the scene in some detail, tell us what is going on in terms of the plot, and detail what you see and hear as a viewer.
THEN, identify the tools Ridley Scott uses to tell this part of the story, develop character(s), reveal a particular theme, etc. REFER TO YOUR NOTES and use film terms specifically. You should do this even more effectively in this post than in last week's post. Those of you who were in class Thursday already have some practice with this.
Try to tie your scene to a particular theme or motif in the movie. (This may help you later when you're looking for a new paper topic for class.)
Grab a soda, a beer, pour a glass of wine,* order food, find someone who likes you enough to watch a 2 hour movie with you. It's a gorgeous flick, so try to enjoy it. Good luck.
* Er, if you're 21+, of course. :)
"Gladiator" was an awesome movie overall. The director Ridley Scott did a great job with this film. A particular scene is when Corronus comfronts his sister in front of her son on her plotting to overthrow him. Scott's use of cinematography was perfect. Corronus was evil so he used a dark light on him with heavy make-up and dark circles around his eyes overall he looked tired and stressed out. While his sister is good so she was in a bright light with light make-up even though she was very frightened and under a ton of stress she seemed more calm and at ease than her brother.
ReplyDeleteYeah, nice observation. I thought the makeup was a totally significant part of developing Commodus's character. Did you notice how much his appearance changed (almost incrementally) throughout the movie?
ReplyDeleteLook back at that first scene with Commodus (when he approaches Maximus at the camp after the victorious battle), then compare that to Commodus in successive scenes up to the last scene. This could make for an interesting analysis....(and possibly even paper topic for you or someone else).
