Gladiator scene analysis -Tevin Lanier

I like the whole movie, but if i had to just choose one scene to analyze it would have to be the Maximus is the new emperor scene. In this scene you witness the cries of a son wanting to be like his father but instead is told that he is not worthy of such prominence. Marcus Aurelius is the emperor of Rome and unlike most great leaders,he chooses a gladiator to reign next instead of his own son. Marcus'son Commodus is perplexed about the shocking news and immediately shows his disapproval. Commodus even states that he has seen his father's list of characteristics for the next emperor and admit that he is not a man of those special virtues. In an effort to give solace to his son, Marcus continues by saying that Commodus' faults are not of any of his fault but of his own wrongdoings. The dramatic scene ends by Commodus hugging his father and giving one more reason to why he deserves a chance at the throne.I chose this particular scene because it raises questions on how a man could see past his family ties for the sake of leaving his country in good hands.
