Karl McMichel Intro
In The Story of an hour by Kate Chopin it is expressed in great detail that in a male dominated society arranged marriages held people captive and forced them to love against their will. In the story Mrs. Mallard is afflicted with heart trouble that seems to limit her ability to do certain things. After hearing the news that her husband Brently Mallard has died, she runs to her room crying as if it’s the worst news of her life. Ironically there is an overwhelming since of freedom that can’t be explained comes over her, but in the end she drops dead when Mr. Mallard shows up still alive. In the institute of marriage husband are suppose to be soul mates. Any woman would be devastated to find out that their husband has died if they unquestionably love them. In The Story of an hour Mrs. Mallard has a since of freedom as if her heart condition is healed as if a weight is lifted off of her. If during this time in history marriage is arranged it could be the cause of Mrs. Mallard being held captive and the reason there was never true love in her marriage that lead to a disastrous end.
