I thought that this story had a very surprising ending. I did not think that the woman was going to
be the one who died, instead of her husband. It seemed as though she was sad a first, when she
thought her husband died. Then she realized, that him being dead would make her free. She then
became joyful, not because he was dead, but because she was finally able to be happy. Because
she said that she loved him; sometimes. I assume that she wasn't very happy being married to him
because if she was, she wouldn't have been so happy that he died. she went from sad, to happy.
once she found out that he was no longer dead, really shocked the mess out of her to the
point where she drops dead.Ths probably could have been because of her heart problems. this
story had a very surprised ending. I don't think that her husband knew all the things that she was
thinking.
You say that you "assume that [Louise] wasn't very happy being married to [Mr. Mallard]." I would assume that too! But then I wonder if she knew that she wasn't happy being married to Mr. Mallard, (a man who loved her!), UNTIL she thought he was dead... Sometimes it seems that we don't even realize that we're unhappy with parts of our lives until something changes, and we experience a new and deeper happiness. It's the new (and maybe unexpected) happiness that shows us how discontent we were before. Maybe she truly was sad about the loss of her husband until she was suddenly experiencing a happiness (freedom!) that she had never known.
ReplyDeleteChopin writes in the story that Louise "saw beyond that bitter moment a long procession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely." What are some other quotes from the story that give us insight as to WHY Louise was unhappy with her marriage??
I thought the whole story was slightly confusing because there are so many unanswered questions yet some of the bold statements ("Free! Body and soul free!" or "And yet she had loved him-sometimes. Often she had not.") are self-explanatory. I don't think we'll ever be able to fully understand the way Louise truly felt about her husband (not unless we were able to ask Chopin lol). It's all so interesting and it makes you think about what love really is. Is it about happiness, commitment, etc.?
